In this short video, Mary Schaefer, a Cree Knowledge Keeper from Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and her grandson Hayze share their family’s trapping traditions. Students learn how teachings, gratitude, and connection to animals and the environment are passed down through generations.
This video can be used on its own or paired with the Sharing Food Stories Series 3: Indigenous Food Stories student activities, which include creative extensions like sorting sequences, illustrating sap collection, and exploring community relationships.
